5.5.3. Location Recee for East London News.

As apart of the planning process of East London News, i took pictures of all the locations where i will be filming my news production. Here are the locations:

1. STOKE NEWINGTON CLISSOLD LEISURE CENTRE - The main storyline of East London News is filmed inside Stoke Newington Clissold Leisure Centre, where the para olympics event will be taking place.

2. STOKE NEWINGTON SCHOOL SPORTS COURT - As apart of the main story, which is all about the sports, para olympics 2010, i decided to film my news reporter on a sports court near the scene of where the story is taking place, as the sport court represents numerous content such as football and basketball.

3. RISING TIDE - The second storyline being about Rising Tide producing the next best musicians will be filmed in the Rising Tide studios, East London, Hackney.

4. MOUTH THAT ROARS - The third storyline being about Mouth That Roars offering free filming classes for children/teenagers, will be filmed at their studios, based in East Central.
5. - VICTORIA PARK - The fifth and last storyline will be filmed outside the front entrance of Victoria Park, which is based in East London.


5.5.2. Storyboard for East London News.

During the planning process of East London News, i created a storyboard of my news production, showing pictures of what the opening sequences would look like, as well as brief information of dialogue and audio and transitions/effects that would be used for each shot. My storyboard also helped me remember what shots i decided to use when filming, as well as the chronological order of my program for when i begin the editing stages.

5.5.1. East London News Script.

I created a script for my anchor, reporter and actors to follow when i was filming them for my production. They all got to look at the script two days in advanced before filming in order to learn it. The actors doing the box vox's created improvisations of stimuli's i gave them.

5.4.5. Actors Agreement contract form for East London News.

Before i began filming East London News, i had to get the actors that i was recording for my production to sign an 'ACTORS AGREEMENT FORM' that i created, so that i had their full permission to use the footage of them in my production and allow it to be seen by anyone that wishes to view East London News.

5.4.4. Location Filming Permission for East London News.

As well as getting my actors to sign a contract form, i also had to get managers/owners/CEO's of the companies whos building/location/environment i decided to use, record and report on when filming East London News. Also to allow me permission to show the footage i have of their building/location/environment to anyone who wishes to view East London News

5.4.1. Timetable for East London News.

Once i worked out all the tasks and process that i needed to do for my production, i decided to create a time management table on microsoft excel to organise all the tasks, as well as create a column of dates on when i decided what task i was going to work on and fufill on each day. I used colour codings for every tasks. I also placed blocks in various columns (Green being rough cut and red being final cut) of when i decided to have complete edit of my production.

Before i began filming my footage and contacting the actors, i created a call sheet for not only myself but the actors as well so that we all knew the exact call time for when filming was going to commence, as well as where, who and what equipment and props was needed.

Friday 3rd December 2010: East London News 5 minute news production (Final Edit) Completed.

5.7. Record of technical and logistical problems encountered at any stage during production.

Her are the technical and logistical problems i encountered while in pre-production of East London News:

Thursday 11th November 2010: Due to having specific days and time slots of when i could film the para olympics for my media project, i could not film any of my other footage, so i decided to schedule in two extra days being the 10th November and 11th November 2010.

Monday 15th November 2010: Due to implications of when i was allowed to film the para olympics event inside clissold lesiure centre, i have been given an extension until February 2011 to finish my whole A2 production.

Friday 19th November 2010: Main presenter shots being filmed in green screen room, encountered problems with sounding and lighting, as well as some of my footage being destroyed on the memory card. I have decided to re-film today on Friday 18th November 2010.

Friday 30th November 2010: Having software problems with Final Cut Pro, application keeps crashing and force quitting every time i am trying to edit or export my footage.

Monday 15th December 2010: My East London News webpage is not uploading to the server due to student restrictions.

Friday 14th January 2011: My East London News webpage is showing up in different structure positions in different internet web browsers and some links and the main video is not working.

East London News: Synopsis

East London: News is a news program that is based around all the latest news and gossips within the main East London boroughs (Hackney, Newham, Bow etc) With the Olympics being at the heart of East London, it is no surprise that the main storyline of the program is around the London 2012 Olympics, with the main story headline being covered about the recent children Para Olympics event held by the Hackney Learning Trust for 71 primary and secondary schools within hackney, Clissold Leisure Centre. The presentation will be presented with a ‘Newsround’ style presentation, with the shots being snappy, the reporter being lively, and full of energy and with less formal dialogue. East London News is constructed in this format because it allows me to relate to the social classes I intend to aim at, and represent the age range of the target audience. (14-25)

In addition to the main storyline, I will also be covering other news topics and gossip happening around all the different boroughs in east London, with majority of the other storylines referring to teenage viewers.

The brand identity of East London News, relates to the style and form of presentation that the program represents, as well as the stories that are being covered. The topics covered will be:


· Hackney Para Olympic events for schools across the borough.


· Rising Tide helping create the next biggest musicians.


· Mouth That Roars, working with students across east London to break within the media industry.


. Macbook creators apple, create partnership with East London Schools.


· Victoria Park holding an exiting entertainment event.

5.1. Analysis of two model texts, from two different studios/channels.

5.1.1. Deconstruction of the video content










BBC LONDON NEWS


Camerawork










The camerawork BBC London News is constructed with a lot of basic but well thought out shots. As the presenters and anchors present the show/storyline they are shot in a mid-shot, capturing the top half of their body and framing them in with the mise en scene.


Mise-en-scene

In Studio










The Mise en scene inside the BBC Studio, where the presenters of the show present, contains the brand identity colours of the program as well as the show logo. The presenter is dressed formally (in a suit) as the show is created within a formal structure.


Live in Location










The mise en scene for the anchors that are presenting live on the location contains the setting/format of the news storyline behind the anchor. In this case the presenter is talking about the London 2012 Olympics, and the mise en scene in the background is a view of the construction work happening on the olympics stadium at the moment.
The anchors are also dressed formal, keeping the same structure in studio and out.


Editing











The editing for the news program is sharp, raw and contains some transitions between each storyline or news bullet. The transition swipe that edits the two story footages together contains an effect of the programs brand identity colours of red, grey and white, keeping the representation of the show logo.


Special Effects










The special effects are simple but effective for this news program, they don't use any fancy special effects as the show is a universal program therefore due to it being related to a universal audience, they keep the effects that doesn't contain a lot of flash photography or fast pace flashy movements.


Titles










The titles on the BBC news is in a basic, bold but also effective font and colour. This is appealing to all ages and social groups but is related more to a middle class audience. The titles contain simply what the BBC contain as it says 'BBC LONDON: ON TV, ON RADIO, ONLINE'. This lays out the information about the show in a really simple and easy to understand format.

5.1.2. Deconstruction of Audio Content

Relationship to images
The music is like a motif/theme music to the BBC News Program as it plays whenever the main anchor begins to present the latest news headines. It also plays during the intro of the news program and at the end of the program. It is almost like part of the programs brand identity.

Use of voiceover, reporters, motifs etc.
The voiceovers from the anchors/reporters are presented in a formal presentation. The voiceover's summerise what the story they are presenting is about.

Sound effects, theme music.
A sound effect of a constant beat as if a clock is ticking down is consistantly played throughout the theme music of the news program and when the anchor and reporters are also reporting the main stories/headlines.
It is a representation of the 'Big Ben' clock, the main time clock that represents London, the main source that the country follows the time from.

The theme music itself is a catchy and simple beat, that plays an identification for the News Program.

Technical Construction
The construction of the BBC London theme music consist of a fast paced mono speed, with the sound of a beep connotating the sound of a clock moving every second. The constuction of the theme music connotates the busy lifestyle of londoners and people that live within London. The images linked with the audio content are various locations and traditional items and events that happen within London.

5.1.3. Institution

Budget and finance
The BBC is funded by the United Kingdoms Tax Payers and TV licenses, so this is implanted into the news program as well. This means that they do not have a specific budget, however it is said to be within a very secure financial supplement.

BBC London News is shown just after the BBC News program that covers all news around Britain and the world, which is shown at 6:00PM, during the evening and is on for 30 minutes, where the London News is then shown at 6:30PM.
The news does come on four times a day on BBC One (The dominant BBC channel). It is broken down, into four schedules, where it covers news happening from morning (6:00AM) , the afternoon (12:00PM), the evening (6:00PM) and then during the night (10:00PM).
BBC News is shown everyday (Sunday - Saturday)
It is also shown 24Hours a day, everyday on the BBC News channel, which is available to Freeview, sky and cable viewers.

The main channel for the BBC London News is BBC One and the BBC 24 Hour News Channel (available to digital viewers). The shows main anchor is an attractive middle aged female presenter named Riz Lateef.

regulation issues
The BBC News have a numerous amount of regulation issues to follow, in order to make sure that their news channel is appropriate for all ages, genders, ethnic backgrounds and religions. Due to being in partnership with Ofcom, ofcom is in control of setting the regulation issues for the BBC News program, making sure that they are followed before making the decision on whether the show can be broadcasted or not. Due to Ofcom being in control of these regulation issues, the BBC's regulation issues structure is constructed by the British Government law.

5.1.4. Audience

Who is the target audience for this programme?
The target audience for the BBC London news is mainly aimed at a universal social class (Working - higher class) audience, and is aimed at both male and female. Appealing to an age range of 16+.
It is also targeted to people that live in London as the 'BBC London News' is only broadcasted within the London regiment.

3 ways the content of the program addresses the target audience.
The presenter of the BBC london news is dressed formally and presents with formal dialogue meaning that it is aimed towards the working social class and up.

The age range of the anchors/reporters start roughly from the age of 25+. This represents the formality and age range of the target audience that the news program is addressing to.

The red and white logo/brand identity also addresses the target audience of the BBC London News as the brand identity represents that the news program is a dominant news channel and covers news from all over the capital of the city. This addresses to its target audience, as some people only like to view news that is updated 24 hours a day, everyday.

3 ways the institution behind the show impacts on the target audience.
Since the BBC is a terrestrial channel and tax payers money get funded into running the BBC, means that the institution has a huge impact on the target audience, with not only their news production being universally suitable for all ages, genders and backgrounds, but all programs they show on their channel are too, meaning that they generate a large target audience, due to the other production companies involved in the BBC.


Due to the BBC News also covering world wide news and not only news just in London means that their target audience also have access to more coverage if they wish, than just their own county.


The BBC is the Number one terrestrial channel in the United Kingdom, this means that the institution is expected to attract a huge target audience and population all over the country. This has a huge impact on the target audience because the more viewers, means that the BBC try to get as much of the latest news ASAP to keep their target audience watching their news production.


SKY NEWS

Camerawork










The camerawork for Sky News is more fancy than BBC. They contain a lot of strong, specific and fancy shots, with this shot here being a long shot of London Bridge, as they zoom in the clock within the actual footage, creating a strong frame point.


Mise-en-scene










The mise en scene for Sky News is similar to the BBC, with the presenters/anchors standing infront of a background that relates to the storyline they are presenting. Also Sky News have their brand identity logo on their program in the top left hand corner throughout the whole show. This is in contrast to the BBC who only have it in the opening title sequence and in studio presentation.


Editing











The editing for the program is really neatly structured while also being bold and fancy. The editing contains a lot of fancy transitions and manipulation, shown within this image where three anchors are all at different locations but are cropped into one image to create a debate amongst the big storyline.


Special Effects



















The special effects contain a huge amount of flash animation and flash photography, they are mostly strong and bold and are really attractive. The two images are shots of the opening title sequence of the news program that is animated.


Titles










The titles are really simple on Sky News but are also strong and effective. They are also placed throughout the news program with this image showing a title on colour background (A title on filmed footage) They are similar to the BBC titles, that are also bold and basic as both programs aim at similar target audiences.


5.1.2. Deconstruction of Audio Content

Relationship to images
The audio content for the program is very strong and striking, featuring a lot of drums in the show introduction and theme music, which connote that the news that the program covers is the biggest news happening within the country and around the world.

Use of voiceover, reporters, motifs etc.
There is a voiceover at the very beginning of this program as the image on screen is the 'Big Ben' clock striking the hour mark, creating a dominant and powerful sound effect as the presenter presents the dialogue of the voice over in a very catchy and gripping context, asking rhetorical questions. i.e. As the time ticks on, will Cameron finally become the countries priminister or will Gordon still be at the heart of the country.

There is a motif sound of the drum one count beat banging when the reporters are each reporting the stories they are covering. This keeps their target audience attention and focused on what is happening and what is to be discussed about within the program.

Sound effects, theme music.
The theme music of Sky News is really catchy and a strong beat to the program. It is different to the BBC London News beat, but represents its program and target audience in the same format as the BBC London News. It plays along with the brand identity of Sky News, being a beat that is easy to remember and identify the news program/channel for the target audience that hears the beat.

The theme music is created specifically for Sky News and is copyrighted to them.


Technical Construction
The Sky News theme tune connotes this world-universal effect when it starts up with the tempo of the music being very loud, but at a medium pace. It also contains the sounds of the trumpet and drum beat which connotes the construction of re-uniting everyone together in order to bring them the latest news happening from a higher and more prosteiged source. The images linked with the theme music hit the nail on the head, with the intro starting with big letters with the Great Britain flag embodied into the lettering. The new Sky News intro now begins with an animation of the earth globe in space while presenting the introduction of Sky News.
5.1.3. Institution

Budget and finance
Sky News have a large budget, which is shown by all the different countries they broadcast in across europe and various other places around the world. Also, as well as having just Sky News, they have are owned by incorporate company SKY, that are a digital service provider as well as an internet and telephone line service provider.

Sky News currently have their own channel on digital television provider 'SKY' (channel 501 in the UK.) The program is broken down into many different columns, with the most popular ones viewed by majority of their target audience are called:

Sky News is showing 24 hours every week day and every weekend on their own channel, even through half term holidays and special occasions such as christmas and easter.

5.1.4. Audience

Who is the target audience for this programme?
Sky News target audience is a universal audience, for both male and female, and is mainly aimed towards middle and upper social classes. The age range for sky news is aged from 16+. Alot of the content on the program is child friendly (like all news programs) with a lot of the dialogue being really formal, and presenters and reporters being dressed in formal clothing (Suit, tie, neat shoes etc).

3 ways the content of the program addresses the target audience.
Sky News is presented and continually represented in a formal and serious, slick structure. The presenters and reporters are dressed and present/address Sky News to its target audience in a formal structure. Relating to the middle and upper social classes.

The introduction, editing, effects and audio construction is neatly edited together and connote that the headlines covered on the program are serious and that they have the most exclusive and what they choose to believe the most entertaining headlines. This is shown through the programs motif and visual effects within the introduction. This addresses the content to the target audience.

Also the age range of majority of the presenters start from the age of 25+ with the oldest presenter roughly being in the late 60's. This connotes that the program is addressed to almost all age's being universal. Also their is a variety of many different ethnic backgrounds amongst the presenters and reporters from Sky News. This also shows that Sky News relates to all nationalities, religions, and viewers all around the world.

3 ways the institution behind the show impacts on the target audience.

Because Sky is a world wide broadcast institution, this means that their target audience receive news from all around the world and not just the their country.

Also because Sky News is a digital/cable broadcast institution means that their target audience gets interactive and exclusive services for being a viewer.

Since Sky News is a digital broadcast institution and have hundreds of other channels exclusive to their institution only, their news channel/feed is broadcasted 24/7 for their target audience as well as updated 24/7 on their website instantly on the go, meaning that their target audience can get the latest updates all over the world exclusively before any other news broadcaster and their target audience. Sky News being 24/7 also means that their target audience do not need to wait for set times ( 8am, 12pm, 6pm etc) like other target audiences to that prefer other institutions to receive an update.

East London News: Website; My Decisions and why.

My reason for my website design/structure are:

  • It is appealing to my teenage target audience, as well as a universal audience.
  • The layout is easy to understand what images are linked to what text.
  • It is easy to navigate around.

My productions brand identity colours that are used throughout the rest of my media sources (Logo, Title sequence etc.) are also linked with the website.

My decisions behind my design/layout for the East London News website are inspired by the structure of the BBC News website, Newsround website and some sources that are structured on The Evening Standard online website.

I decided to use the following colours as not only do they represent my productions brand identity, but they also link in with my other productions, meaning that anyone that knows of East London News, could easily recognise the website by its use of design and brand identity.

I think my design is really effective because not only is it appealing to my target audience, but its use of functions, storylines, layout, design and many more make it a strong competitor amongst real life media production websites.

Once i created my first draft of my website structure/home page layout for East London News i then decided to create a final draft of it on the software Adobe Photoshop, where i adapted on from my first draft and showed what colours i decided to use for certain area's of my production.
